Insights on the changing dynamics of cemetery use in the neolithic and chalcolithic of southern Portugal. Radiocarbon dating of Lugar do Canto Cave (Santarém)
Lugar do Canto Cave is one of the most relevant Neolithic burial caves in Portugal given not only its extraordinary preservation conditions at the time of discovery but also the quality of the field record obtained during excavation. Its material culture immediately pointed to a Middle Neolithic cemetery but recent radiocarbon determinations also allowed the recognition of an apparent two step phasing of its use within the period (ca. 4000-3400 cal BC): an older one characterized by a single burial and a later reoccupation as a collective necropolis. Comparisons with other well-dated cave cemeteries in Southern Portugal permitted the recognition of changing funerary practices and strategies of cemetery use during the later stages of the Neolithic and the Chalcolithic: 1) ca. 3800 cal BC as the possible turning point from the practice of individual to collective burials; 2) alternating periods of intensive use and deliberate abandonment of cemeteries (evidenced by their intentional closure). Research avenues to investigate the social organization and ideological context underlying these aspects of the Neolithic communities in greater depth are tentatively pointed out in this paper.FEDER funds through the Programa Operacional Factores de Competividade (COMPETE
conscrição: a conscrição impõe à sociedade
um custo de oportunidade, resultante do facto
de se obrigarem cidadãos a prestar serviço
militar. Neste artigo, procede-se à quantificação
desse custo estimando-se, assim, o verdadeiro
custo económico da Profissionalização das
Forças Armadas Portuguesas. Usando o salário
mínimo nacional como valor de referência
para o custo de oportunidade, conclui-se que,
enquanto os custos financeiros resultantes da
profissionalização aumentaram em 7%, em
termos económicos esta alteração teve um
impacto líquido positivo no bem-estar social
(2%)
We conduct an analysis of Exchange-traded Funds (ETFs), Index and Equity mutual funds
and their respective benchmark during the 2010-2015 period for the Portuguese fund industry.
For the period 2010-2017, we test ETFs for price inefficiency (existence of deviations
between prices and the Net Asset Value) and persistence. We find that the studied ETF does
not always outperform index funds in replicating the variations of the PSI 20 index, despite
exhibiting better tracking ability when facing downside deviations of the benchmark and a
better capacity of smoothing tracking deviations. Regarding ETFs price efficiency and its
persistence, the study reveals that the examined ETF is priced at a low average discount
with evidence of deviations persistence of at least two days. The investment schemes with
the highest ability to track the PSI 20 Index were PSI20 (ETF), BBVA PPA Índice PSI20,
and the equity mutual fund BPI Portugal.
Artistic residencies: paths and methodologies
We live in a dynamic time for research methods. In this context, art-based research gained relevant popularity in the social research context. However, incorporating the arts into research methodology involves much more than use artistic forms and expressions to understand and represent human experiences. In this paper, we aim to:(1) address divergent definitions associated with art-based research; (2) describe research methodologies that employ arts; (3) relate divergent definitions to common criticisms and misconceptions surrounding art-based research; and (4) present paths and methodologies for art education. In addressing these issues, we will present some projects developed in a funding program of the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (Portuguese national Research Funding Organization), "Artist Residencies" in 2020. Participated in this program eighteen (n=18) fellowships students from different countries. The program's organization represents the logical reasoning for the acquisition and development of theoretical, technical, investigative, and artistic skills. The results addressed in this paper are related with the gains of lesser-known paths and methodologies in art-based research, that provide an interesting approach, both in the structure, as well in the commitment, effectiveness and even the creativity of the research and researchersThis work has been supported by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the Project Scope:

Essays on financial flows and globalization
Doutoramento em EconomiaThis dissertation compiles three papers that delve into how globalization has affected financial
flows, specifically, at the macro level, it analysis how investment depends on national savings in
open economies. At the micro level, it measures how firm performance is affected by four different
forms of internationalization, and finally, it presents evidence of the expansion of informal lending by
introducing at least one market where a FinTech player could yield a decisive contribution. Below
are the individual abstracts.
Chapter 1: High net stocks of foreign liabilities and sluggish productivity growth - the key to the
resurgence of the Feldstein-Horioka puzzle in Europe?
This paper discusses the resurgence of the Feldstein-Horioka puzzle after the global financial
crisis within the European space. Using an intertemporal choice model, I start by describing the
optimal investment-saving schedules of small open economies, showing that investment and savings
can correlate even without frictions to capital mobility when macroeconomic determinants that favor
capital flows from richer to poorer economies deteriorate. I then test the model predictions against
a data set of 12 European economies spanning since the inception of the Maastricht treaty and
ending immediately before the start of the Covid-19 pandemics. I find that the I-S correlation is
generally low both across and within open economies in accordance with the theoretical stylized fact.
However, this can be jeopardized when economies accumulate large net stocks of foreign liabilities
on top of sluggish productivity growth. Ultimately, if investment and savings are not rationally
managed according to productivity growth, and because foreign investors eventually rise a premium
on the new liabilities, therefore raising the cost of financing investment with foreign funds, this leads
investment and savings to correlate across and within countries, therefore explaining the resurgence
of the puzzle in Europe after the global financial crisis, when it had already been declared as
extinguished.
Chapter 2: Globalization Channels and Firm Performance
Using a new panel dataset of about 140 thousand Portuguese firms during 2006-2019, we measure
the effects of globalization on firm-level performance along four dimensions: ownership of capital,
employment of foreign-seasoned managers, and participation in export and import markets. Once at
least one of these channels is active, firms are larger, less leveraged, employ better-qualified workers,
and pay higher hourly wages. We also uncover a pecking order in the effects of the different channels.
In particular, export-market participation has generally larger effects than foreign ownership and
import market participation and having foreign-experienced managers. All four channels interact
and are often complementary: foreign firms tend to export and import more, whilst foreign ownership
in turn boosts exports along the extensive margin, though the marginal gains on size, productivity,
and wages of becoming foreign-owned are smaller when the firm is already an exporter. We also find
that smaller firms typically stand the most to gain from becoming an exporter or foreign-owned.
Chapter 3: Online Financing without FinTech: Evidence from Online Informal Loans
We present the first comprehensive dataset on an online informal micro-lending community.
These informal loans are small, short duration and high-cost. Using our unique micro data, and
the Covid-19 pandemic as a laboratory, we uncover different types of information contained on loan
terms and on the narratives of market participants. First, loan terms reflect the aggregate economic
context of borrowers and lenders. Second, narratives among market participants contain additional
and timely information about aggregate and individual borrower circumstances. Third, lenders
imperfectly screen on both loan terms and narrative information. These findings highlight the role
of data in FinTech. Transparency on micro-loans can improve the efficiency of the credit market,
democratizing access to finance for borrowers, while protecting lenders.
Capítulo 1: High net stocks of foreign liabilities and sluggish productivity growth - the key to the resurgence of the Feldstein-Horioka puzzle in Europe?
no espaço europeu.
Capítulo 2: Globalizatíon Channels and Firm Performance
Capítulo 3: Online Financing wíthout FinTech: Evid ence from Online Informal Loans
Online buying behavior in technological and office products
The evolution and growth of E-commerce nowadays is irrefutable. The revolution and introduction of new technologies have profound implications in business management, offering tools for the globalization of the market. This evolution and change in the market also leads to different realities towards not just the business itself but also the consumer. It is important to understand what are the main features of information search and purchase behavior online and understand online consumer behavior (what are the characteristics, what motivates somebody to buy online, what are his fears, etc).
This study aims, from existing knowledge about information search and purchase behavior online, to deepen the knowledge of Portuguese behavior to give information to companies to better develop their business. In this case, this study will be made for Technological and Office products.
How the major capital markets interact in the world: a VAR approach
For many years, financial data analysis, such as stock prices and returns, has been receiving a lot of attention from researchers. A variety of methods has been proposed and implemented in order to forecast these variables and also to study the relation and interaction between them.
The main goal of this thesis is to analyze the interaction between the following seven indexes the PSI20 (Portugal), CAC40 (France), IBEX35 (Spain), NIKKEI225 (Japan), DAX (Germany), NASDAQ (United States of America), and FOOTSIE100 (United Kingdom).
